ArtBiz 2026 Schedule:
All classes will be held at The Newburgh Armory Unity Center (321 S. William St.) and will take place on Saturday afternoons from 1-3pm
Saturday July 11th: Build Your Own Sculptural Vase
Join ceramic artist Ashley Van Houten to build, sculpt, and paint your own unique clay vase! In this hands-on ceramics workshop, participants will learn traditional coil-building techniques before adding playful sculptural elements, textures, and colorful underglazes to make their piece their own.
Saturday July 18th: Create Your Own Zine
Join artist Roxenne Contrerasfor a hands-on introduction to the world of zines. Explore the history of self-publishing before creating your own handmade booklet using a variety of folding and binding techniques. Through illustration, collage, poetry, and personal storytelling, you'll design a one-of-a-kind zine. that reflects your own voice.
Saturday July 25th: Botanical Printmaking
Join artist Judy Thomas for a hands-on printmaking workshop exploring two exciting ways to create art with nature. Using leaves, flowers, and other botanical materials, participants will make vibrant cyanotypes (sun prints) using UV light before experimenting with gel plate monoprinting to transform the same natural forms into bold, one-of-a-kind prints. Along the way, Judy will introduce the history of these printmaking techniques while encouraging creativity, experimentation, and observation of the natural world.
Saturday August 1st: Lifecasting Workshop
Join sculptor Cesar Castro for an exciting introduction to life casting and mold-making. Participants will create a detailed cast of their own hand using alginate before transforming it into a one-of-a-kind sculpture with paint and mixed media. Along the way, you'll learn the fundamentals of mold-making, casting, and sculpture while leaving with a personalized artwork unlike any other.
Saturday August 8th: Rawhide Drum Making
In this hands-on workshop, participants will craft their own rawhide frame drum and drumstick while exploring the traditions, techniques, and cultural significance of drum-making. Led by artist Adam Edwards, students will work with natural materials, discover the role of rhythm and craftsmanship, and engage with Indigenous technologies through a lens of respect, creativity, and care.

What is ArtBiz?
ArtBiz is a series of free classes for Newburgh youth, ages 13-18 focusing on providing exposure to career paths and career opportunities in arts and culture. Classes span a variety of interests including visual arts, performance, digital arts, writing and hand-crafts, as well as other forms of cultural production such as gardening and culinary arts.
ArtBiz will be taught by Newburgh artists, makers, and other creative professionals.
The Goal of ArtBiz
To engage youth in activities that can inspire the pursuit of viable creative career paths in the arts and to provide paid opportunities for our Newburgh artist community in line with our directive “to create expanded educational opportunities to all persons, and to young persons in particular…and to inspire youth to become aware of and involved with the arts and the role of art in their lives and in the life of the City of Newburgh.”
When is ArtBiz?
ArtBiz will take place at The Newburgh Armory Unity Center (Larkin Center) located at 321 South William Street on the following Saturdays from 1pm-3pm
